The Foothills

Diamond is thrust up against the immovable object of the Border Volcano, creating a towering cliff.
The mountainous terrain looms over the plains, leaving a cold shadow, insulated by a world's worth of mineral.
And different worlds have made contributions - there is reinforced high-tech concrete in those heights intermingled with limestone caves carved by water.

You climb higher into the mountain. Do you have any goals more specific than "shiny"? Perhaps you are just seeking height, or climbing more or less at random toward gleams?

Nor look for diamond gleam and height to see farther, so can see gleam. Also look for things that may help to decode the diamond riddle.

I've been quietly tailing the deities as they explore new areas, waiting for something to look inviting. When Nor finds the riddle diamond I hop around trying to get a look at it, but he puts it away too quickly. I follow him up the mountain. "Wait! If you're not going to solve that thing, at least let me look at it."

Spoiler: show
How does the three-day lock work? Will there be a notice when the puzzle is open to others?

Yes, that sounds good. Someone can also voluntarily abandon the puzzle, but they'd have to be explicit about it.

Nor, you're finding that the landscape has changed dramatically. Trees have trouble growing, other than gnarly pines. You see some toads, but they can't talk.

You head up closer to the peak of the mountain. When you arrive, you see that the Heights is split up into quite a few irregular peaks. You even spot a glimpse of one that seems to be made of dull concrete.

Nor snags a toad on the way by and chomps it, definitely better tasting than the ones from Crognac's gut. Still chewing on the toad, Nor takes out the diamond and holds it up, "You figure, am split treat with shine bot?"

An old man with a long stick wanders through the foothills past where Nor is standing. He spots the diamond and chuckles lightly, then belches with a sound eerily similar to the croaking of the frogs in the pond. He smiles apologetically, revealing teeth made of pure adamant, and then starts making his way up another hill.

"Oh you can have the diamond; it's the puzzle I'm interested in. Unless you're going to solve it." I don't seem to think that's very likely.

"Fine." I scan the text on the diamond, then head back down the mountain, leaving the gem with Nor. I go back past the pond and into the oak forest. I'm looking for the shortest tree.
